MOVING FORWARD WITH THE COLUMBIA PIKE TRANSIT INITIATIVE!

WELCOME to the Columbia Pike Transit Initiative! Envision an advanced transit system that supports revitalization efforts and reinforces the “Main Street” environment imagined for Columbia Pike – a transit investment that would advance local land use and redevelopment initiatives and create a lasting improvement in the Columbia Pike corridor.

The Columbia Pike Transit Initiative will provide enhanced transit service to the corridor that will increase mobility and accommodate expected growth in transit ridership. By connecting residential and commercial areas along Columbia Pike to major activity centers in Pentagon City and the Bailey’s Crossroads area, this effective transportation improvement is a key element to the Columbia Pike renaissance.

The Modified Streetcar Alternative emerged as the preferred alternative from the Local Alternatives Analysis of 2005 (AA) conducted by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) in conjunction with Arlington County and Fairfax County. The proposed transit improvement follows a 5-mile long alignment with 14 initially identified station locations, running between the Pentagon City Metrorail Station and the Skyline complex near Bailey’s Crossroads.

STATUS UPDATE

The Columbia Pike Transit Initiative has progressed from the AA and is preparing for the next step, the environmental documentation and preliminary engineering phase, for the proposed transit improvements. Since the AA process, WMATA, Arlington County, and Fairfax County have continued coordinating with project stakeholders and analyzing key technical issues. In the interim, while setting the stage for the environmental phase, the project will:

Columbia Pike Multimodal Project

Arlington County has initiated a related project, the Columbia Pike Multimodal Project. The multimodal study will address key features including: right-of-way parameters, environmental features, and utilities issues. The objective of this project is to conduct environmental documentation and preliminary design for multimodal street improvements along the entire length of Columbia Pike in Arlington County. The technical aspects and public involvement efforts of the study are expected to inform and be coordinated with the Columbia Pike Transit Initiative as both projects move forward. The multimodal study will “prepare the way” for the planned transit improvements associated with the Columbia Pike Transit Initiative.
